- Joseph Haydn – String Quartet Op.20 No.1
- Leoš Janáček – String Quartet No.1 Kreutzer Sonata
- Nicholas Marshall – Clarinet Quintet Introduction and Allegro (Festival Commission)
- Johannes Brahms – Clarinet Quintet Op.115
Join us on the opening night for world class chamber music. The Castalian Quartet are in demand for their ‘powerful individuality of sound’ and their ‘instinctive singularity of musical intention’, while Michael Collins is one of the world’s finest clarinettists and one of the ‘most complete musicians’ of his generation. Many composers have written works specially for Michael and he has appeared with the world’s major orchestras.
The concert features works for string quartet and clarinet quintet, including Haydn’s witty String Quartet Op.20 No.1, Janáček’s powerful and operatic first string quartet ‘Kreutzer Sonata’ and Brahms’ late masterpiece the glorious Clarinet Quintet. In addition, the Festival has commissioned a new work for clarinet quintet from Nicholas Marshall, the Festival’s former Artistic Director.
