Stravinsky: The Soldier’s Tale Suite
Brahms: Clarinet Trio Op.114
Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time
Formed specially for the Budleigh Festival, from four of the finest young instrumentalists in the UK, the L’Ondon Ensemble combines with narrator Joanna David for a unique programme exploring themes of war and peace through poetry from the Second World War and music from countries engaged in the conflict.
Jointly curated by Budleigh Music Festival Director Jason Thornton and Budleigh Literature Festival Director Annie Ashworth, the concert commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the end of the war. Written whilst he was interned in a German POW camp, is Olivier Messiaen’s masterpiece Quartet for the End of Time.
It is an intense meditation on themes of love, death, forgiveness and peace, whilst Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale is a witty, sardonic take on the fate of a soldier who trades his fiddle for unlimited financial gain. Brahms’ Clarinet Trio is one of the greatest pieces of chamber music ever written, laced with sombre but peaceful introspection.
6.30pm Pre-Concert talk with Jason Thornton and Annie Ashworth at the Temple Methodist Church. Exclusively for Festival Friends on production of a current Membership Card
